* Animal Safari: A Learning Journey
Recommended by Booklist "for young animal enthusiasts and classroom audiences," the series emphasizes respect for the animals and their habitats. Children interact with animals of all kinds from around the globe, while learning about each one.
Karla discusses the wild environments from which the animals came and imparts an appreciation for the animals' place in our world. The animals include a sulfur-crested cockatoo, an African pygmy hedgehog, a Nile monitor, a ring-tailed lemur, and a llama.
With her scarlet macaw, rose-haired tarantula, squirrel monkey, iguana, and boa constrictor, Karla explains how such inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest help to keep their environment healthy and thriving.
Children in Karla's audience see, touch, and hold various farm animals, such as bunnies, chicks, and ducklings. They also meet a baby goat and a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. Observing from a nearby corral is a miniature horse.
Using various bugs, like millipedes and cockroaches, Karla discusses their behavior and characteristics. Children touch and hold a rose-haired tarantula and an emperor scorpion, and they also learn about predators of "creepy critters," such as frogs.
Children see an eastern box turtle, gopher tortoise, spur-thighed tortoise, bearded dragon, Chinese water dragon, Brazilian rainbow boa, albino Burmese python, a young alligator, and learn where these reptiles live, what they eat, and how they survive.
In addition to being used for food and clothing, animals have served man as pets and companions, helper animals, and scavengers. We meet Karla's chinchilla, yellow-naped parrot, capuchin monkey, North American opossum, and llama.
Meet some of the many animals that help to maintain the balance in healthy wetland ecosystems. These animals include a tarantula, tree frogs, turtles (a red-eared slider and a box turtle), giant hermit crabs, a caiman, and snakes.
Meet some of today's zoo animals that share a variety of common features with dinosaurs, including several breeds of chickens, an emu, a Catalina macaw, leopard geckos, a Chinese water dragon, and a black and white tegu.
